Who We Are

The Committee for the Arts of the Indian Subcontinent (CAIS) is an important forum for the exploration, appreciation, and enjoyment of a vast array of art forms from the Indian subcontinent. Committee members have a unique opportunity to support the development of the arts of the Indian Subcontinent centered around the San Diego Museum of Art’s world-renowned and comprehensive Edwin Binney 3rd Collection of paintings, manuscripts and sculptures. The CAIS supports the Museum’s vision of connecting people to art by creating awareness of the culture and arts of the Indian subcontinent in the greater San Diego area’s community.

Edwin Binney 3rd Collection with Worldwide Acclaim

The Museum’s Edwin Binney 3rd Collection has over 1,450 paintings and is one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of South Asian paintings outside of India. The collection surveys every major school of South Asian painting from Buddhist palm leaf manuscripts of the 12th century to 19th century images from colonial India. The collection has remarkable holdings of minatures made for the Mughal, Deccani, Rajasthani, and Pahari courts from the 15th to the 19th centuries as well as Sikh and Hindu religious themes.

Heir to the Crayola Crayon fortune, Edwin Binney 3rd studied at Harvard University where he was awarded a Ph.D. in Romance languages. He served as a member of the Museum’s Board of Trustees and maintained an office in the Museum’s library where he carried out research on the paintings. He left his collection to San Diego Museum of Art, and the works became part of the Museum’s permanent collection. More on Binney …
